trans-resveratrol
Trans-Resveratrol Capsules, 300 mg

600 mg of Japanese knotweed root extract (Polygonum cuspidatum) standardized to 50 percent trans-resveratrol, providing 300 mg of trans-resveratrol per capsule. 60 capsules.

Read the number carefully

Most resveratrol products in this category are labelled by extract weight. A bottle that says 600 mg is usually a 50 percent extract delivering 300 mg of the actual compound. We are naming this product by what it delivers, not by what it weighs, because the two are not the same number and the difference is the whole point.

What the research supports

The most reproducible human finding for trans-resveratrol is on endothelial function. Pooled across 17 studies, flow-mediated dilation improved by about 1.4 percentage points. Flow-mediated dilation is a measure of how a blood vessel responds, not a clinical outcome, and heterogeneity between those studies was high. Trans-resveratrol is also a polyphenol, one of the same family found in red grapes and red wine.

That is close to the honest limit of what can be said.

What the research does not support

We would rather you hear this from us. Resveratrol is the best-known case of laboratory results that did not carry over into people. Twenty years of human trials have produced a body of work that is largely null: no effect on insulin sensitivity in people with normal glucose, no effect on blood pressure in the primary analysis of every major meta-analysis, no effect on cholesterol, and conflicting results on inflammation. No human trial has ever shown a reduction in clinical events, in functional decline, or in mortality.

The sirtuin story does not hold up either. A 2010 study showed that the apparent activation of SIRT1 by resveratrol was an artifact of the fluorescent test substrate used in the original experiments. There is no human evidence that resveratrol extends lifespan or slows aging, and the one long-term observational dataset, following 783 older adults for nine years, found no association with mortality.

There is also a form gap worth knowing about. Nearly every trial used 98 to 99 percent pure synthetic trans-resveratrol. This is a botanical extract.

On testing

Made in a facility certified to current Good Manufacturing Practice, and the manufacturer completes third-party testing on the material.

What we cannot do yet is hand you the certificate. Those documents belong to the manufacturer and are not released for marketing use, so we are not going to publish one or imply that we have. We would rather name the limit than work around it.

It is also temporary. As individual products earn the volume, we are moving them to our own batch runs, which puts lot-level testing under our control and makes published results possible. When that happens for this product, it will be said here.

How to use it, and what that adds up to

The manufacturer's directions are one capsule twice a day, ideally 20 to 30 minutes before a meal. At that intake a bottle is a 30 day supply and you are taking 600 mg of trans-resveratrol a day.

Worth knowing: the strongest chronic human evidence, including the cerebrovascular and bone work in postmenopausal women, was generated at 150 mg a day. Higher has not been shown to be better, and resveratrol's dose response in humans is not a straight line. In one trial 75 mg produced a significant effect where 150 mg and 300 mg did not. If you want to sit closer to the studied dose, one capsule a day is a reasonable choice, and it makes the bottle last two months.

Before you start

Resveratrol has a documented interaction risk with anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs, and it can affect enzymes that metabolize other medications. Talk to a clinician before use if you take any prescription medication, have a hormone-sensitive condition, are scheduled for surgery, or are pregnant or nursing. Gastrointestinal effects have been reported at much higher doses than this one.

These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.
